Is French cinema still in crisis?

Cinema is in trouble”, is what we have been told since the Covid crisis.

Indeed, because of the repeated confinement, it was very complicated to go out to the cinema. But since the restrictions are lifted, the French have difficulty getting up from the couch. We got too used to streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney +, HBO, and others. Is cinema intended to resolve itself to the limits of television screens, or even worse, phone screens? No, the cinema has not said its last word. Cinemas are offering more and more offers to attract spectators and compensate for the increase in seats due to inflation. The CNC has even encouraged the French to return to the cinema with its advertising clip “We all have a good reason to go to the cinema”. According to the CNC, cinema attendance reached 152 million in 2022, much less than the pre-COVID period but still a large figure compared to 2021 (96 million admissions).

Despite the criticism that the 5 films at the French box office were all American, the market share of French films is almost equal to that of the Americans: 40.9% for French films, 40.5% for American films and 18.6% for other foreign films. This is due to the diversity of French films released: Novembre, Mascarade, Qu’est-ce qu’on a tous fait au bon dieu, Simone: le voyage du siècle, Couleurs de l’incendie, …

We can therefore conclude that cinema is better. He has not fully recovered from the covid crisis (which is still not over!) but we are on the right track. We must continue to return to cinema, we must continue to bring to life this art that amazes us so much.
